 Too much talk?

The teachers at my pet therapy certification class keep telling me to talk to my border collie while she is heeling, or I will get points deducted on the final exam. I think this is counter-productive- too many signals. ( Maybe it works for phlegmatic dogs, but I think it hypes mine up.) Does anyone have any favorite border collie behavior books that deal with this issue?

I think it varies from dog to dog. I certainly found that talking to my collie Dan winds him up from a very quite dog to a lot of answering back. I know talk to him as little as poss. when he's working and he now remains quiet and much more focused. I have had other dogs who need lots of encouragement. In obedience competition you are marked on how the dog works and not on how much you chat
