I have an 8 month old border collie cross jack russell bitch (just picture a border collie that's trapped inside a parson jack russell size body!). It took a while, but she's now finally toilet trained . . . except that she's taken to weeing in her bed occasionally (several times a week at least - this can be over night or during the day, whether her bed is indoors or outdoors - there's really no pattern to this behaviour), and is perfectly happy to lie on top of it once it's all nicely soaked into the bedding. Have any other border collie owners had this experience with their pets and if so, how have they overcome it? Help!

I think the first port of call should be the vet just to make sure there is nothing medical causing this. Does she drink a lot ? Does she only do this if left for longer than normal? Does she only do it if left alone? These are questions the vet may ask and even if nothing medical is causing it are the sort of things a behaviourist would ask. If the vet gives a clean bill of health then it is really a job for a behaviourist who can perhaps identify why this is happening.
It is not normal for dogs to soil their bed, although you do of course get exceptions!!
All the best

Hi Ben, thanks for your swift response. Will definitely make a trip to the vet to investigate further (am pretty sure it's a behavioural thing though). I did note from a US border collie website today, however, that other owners have experienced similar occasional behaviour and have put it down to the dogs having a fondness for somewhere nice and soft to "perform" (I suppose that if they were human they'd be Andrex afficionados!). Might be interesting to see if this behaviour would continue if her sweet-smelling fluffy duvet were substituted with something a little less appealing. The puzzing thing is that our other Borderjack (who's 9 years her senior and who shares her basket) will also happily lie in the soggy bedding!
