Might be a bit extreme but our collie spends a lot of time with us, going canoeing and now he is nearly 12 months old he has started on the odd decent day in the hills too. He is currently being trained to whistle commands and gets lots of input!
If you are into the outdoors make sure that your dog can stop, go and come back on command and then get out and about. As ours gets older he will be doing more and more. my parents collie who I "hill trained" years ago loves it and gets excited everytime he sees a rucksack come out.

Relating to the use of stuffed Kongs mentioned above; ok it's taken me about two years to rely to the original post but I'm a slow reader! One trick I used to do with my collies was to stuff Kongs with various small biscuits (something like a small terrier meal, that kind of thing) mixed with some grated cheese. Then put the Kongs in a microwave until the cheese melts. When the cheese cools down and sets it cements all the biscuits together. Guaranteed to keep collies amused for a little while at least. Hello just joined.
I've had a border collie for just over 10 weeks (she's 4 1/2 months old now).
The breeder I got her from called her angel, and I've kept the name.
On topic kongs work pretty well, recently I've put a treat in the kong and put marmite around the kong (she loves it) and it's kept her busy for a good 1/2 an hour.
If you want to keep her busy slightly longer try a babble ball (animal sounds), she was bred where there were horses so she likes the noise as it reminds her of them.
I've recently tried hiding treats from her by putting them under plant pots (she gets them with no problem and today because of the rain hid them behind chairs and doors in the backroom.
I give her a pigs ear once every two weeks (breeder used to give her this) and the first time she had one with us she was barking at it for half an hour, until she realised what it was.

I really would not advise it. Border collies are so energetic and need so much mental stimulation that they need two or three long walks a day. My border collie was a rescue dog and was the centres longest staying dog. He'd been fostered out around four times but no-one kept him. He now gets two or three long walks a day. I walk a mile or two, he sprints leaps and jumps about 10. But the exercise and mental stimulation is vital to a border collie. He's wonderful now.

Can you over train a Border Collie cross puppy ?
Hi All,
I have a 10 week old Border Collie Cross puppy, that I would like to eventually train to do heel work to music and agility, but I also want her to be a well balanced happy dog, as a priority.
At the moment she just picks up things so quickly.
She does
SIT
Down
Paw
other Paw
table
Go table, where she leave me jumps on table sits and waits for me to take over the treat
and then she'll do sit and the rest of the above on this lttle table
she also walk to Heel using Close looking up at me
I don't know if this is just the easy puppy stage when they do heel !!!
She seems to want to learn all the time, she's very playful, but when she has a crazy spell and starts running around the garden pruning, a training session seems to calm her down, and settle her in for a nap.
Am I doing right though, I'd hate to damage her in anyway
thanks for listening
Amanda

I bought a Nina Ottoson toy for my BC and he loved it so much I've now got a few.
They are 'educational' toys where you hide treats and the dog uses his nose or paw - you teach which - to get the treats. (Before anyone complains about 'treats' I use his dry food out of his daily allowance!) These are a really good way to build up a bond and teach simple commands like paw, push, nose etc.. They are expensive but most of them you could probably make yourself anyway.
I also bought a childs play tunnel from Argos and he loves running through it so he's now learnt the word 'tunnel' too.
I'm finding it harder to teach things like 'twist and 'weave' and also consistancy walking to heel. He also has the attention span of a goldfish at the obediance classes. BC's intelligence seems to translate easily to boredom when they can already do something or, are waiting for their turn.
The stuffed kong doesn't seem to last long and although we play hide and seek a lot in the house and in the woods he tends to get too excitable at times so it has to be in moderation.
I think it's down to personality, Ti's brother is definately a lot calmer, he lives with my parents, he looks at the educational toys as if to say why should I bother!
